preview for Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal - Official Trailer (Netflix)

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal became one of Netflix’s most compelling and widely discussed true crime documentary series when its three episodes were released earlier this year. The show followed the titular Murdaugh family, a well-connected dynasty of laywers in South Carolina, as they found themselves implicated in a series of deaths.

Murdaugh Murders recounted the deaths of Stephen Smith, a classmate of son Buster, family housekeeper Gloria Satterfield, and Mallory Beach, a friend of son Paul, before culminating in the murders that gave the show its title: the shooting deaths of Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh, for which patriarch Alex was arrested and charged.

The trial of Alex Murdaugh actually played out in real-time as the first season of Murdaugh Murders hit streaming, generating even more interest in the show, even as viewers seemed to be left with more questions than answers.

Will there be a Season 2 of Murdaugh Murders?

A second season of Murdaugh Murders is coming, Netflix has confirmed. In fact, the filmmakers claim that they had always planned to revisit this story.

“We always envisioned this as six episodes, and it was really just about getting Netflix on board,” said director Michael Gasparro. “They saw that there were still stories to be told.”

“There is a lot still to uncover here,” said producer Jenner Furst. “It’s fascinating and enthralling, and we think it all works together in a truly unique way, so we are super excited about the possibilities here.”

Who will be in Season 2?

Season 2 will include additional interviews with several figures who appeared in Season 1, including Paul Daughty’s ex-girlfriend Morgan Daughty and the late Mallory Beach’s former boyfriend Anthony Cook, as well as new witnesses, some of whom were previously unable to participate in the documentary due to their involvement in the on-going trial.

The Murdaugh family’s former housekeeper Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson and Shelly Smith, a woman who acted as caretaker to Alex’s mother Libby, will also reportedly appear in the new episodes. “Blanca and Shelly, they were some of the strongest witnesses that actually testified, especially because they were there the day of the murders,” said Murdaugh Murders executive producer Julia Willoughby Nason. “They were very, very close to the family.”

When will Season 2 be released?

The three-episode second season of Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal will begin streaming on September 20, 2023.
