It is difficult to replace Mookie Betts’ impact atop a lineup, but the Los Angeles Dodgers may turn to arguably the best player in baseball.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters his “initial thought” is he will hit Shohei Ohtani in the leadoff spot while Betts is sidelined.

ESPN noted Betts suffered a fractured left hand during Sunday’s 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals. He was hit in the hand by a 97.9 mph fastball from Dan Altavilla, although the injury will not require surgery.

Roberts said there is no exact timetable for return, although the absence will be “for some time.”

Los Angeles can do far worse than Ohtani when it comes to finding a replacement leadoff hitter.

The two-time American League MVP is slashing .305/.377/.571 with 17 home runs, 44 RBI and 15 stolen bases during his first season in the National League and brings speed, power and the ability to consistently get on base.

That is exactly what teams want from their leadoff spot, so the National League West team should at least be able to tread water until the other star returns.
