Telangana govt empowers sarpanches to decide on wild boar culling, order triggers fear of misuse

The Telangana government has empowered sarpanches of gram panchayats to decide on culling of wild pigs that damage agriculture crops outside the Protected Areas and Reserve Forest areas. The government order issued Tuesday notifies over 12,720-odd gram sarpanches as ‘Honorary Wildlife Warden’ for this purpose for one year.

While the latest order is hailed by some as need of the hour, others criticize the same as an open invitation to indiscriminate hunting that could impact the wildlife adversely.

As per the orders, the sarpanch can act only on receipt of a written complaint from a farmer, following which he/she along with a group of elders from the village have to investigate and ascertain if the situation warrants hunting. The same has to be documented in the Panchnama and communicated to the forest department’s field officer. For culling wild pigs, services of hunters enlisted by Telangana Forest Department or any local expert shooter with a valid license for possession of firearms can be availed, states the order which also clarifies that no wild pigs found in protected areas, reserved forest areas and other government lands shall be hunted.

Jayalalithaa’s residence inaugurated as a memorial

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa’s residence, ‘Veda Nilayam’ in Poes Garden, was formally inaugurated as a memorial Thursday by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. Except for the leaders in the party’s high command, others were restricted from entering the premises. The event was inaugurated by senior AIADMK ministers with the lighting of lamps.

WeHub creates a ramp for Telangana’s women entrepreneurs to take off

The pandemic-induced-lockdown of last year has brought to light a new and evolved narrative of women entrepreneurship, one that involves merit and dignity, from Telangana.

When K Kavya Sirikonda, an electronics engineer from Teldarpally in Telangana’s Khammam district, decided to start a business it was not difficult for her to choose mushroom farming given her family background. She prepared a detailed project report, pitched her plan before the bankers, and succeeded. Through the COVID-19 pandemic season, when challenges of breakages in supply and distribution channels mounted on her, she turned it into an opportunity by scaling up and diversifying into pickle-making in addition to mushroom farming. For all the handholding through these difficult times, she credits WeHub, a special incubator and accelerator for women entrepreneurs.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, WeHub will mark three years of its existence. Since its inception, the initiative of the government of Telangana has engaged with 3427 women entrepreneurs, incubated 148 women-led start-ups, and supported 276 such startups across the ecosystem. Explained: Out of prison, a look at the four options before V K Sasikala

V K Sasikala’s incarceration in the disproportionate asset case came to an end Wednesday. However, since she is being treated for Covid-19 at a Bengaluru hospital, it may take a few more days for Sasikala to reach Chennai.

But the question that Tamil Nadu is asking, is what next for Sasikala? A lot has changed in the years J Jayalalithaa’s confidante has been in prison. Rebel leader O Panneerselvam, who was ousted by Sasikala from the CM’s post before going to the prison, is back in the AIADMK. And the Chief Minister she handpicked, Edappadi K Palaniswami, had joined hands with the ‘betrayer’ Panneerselvam and ousted her from the party’s top post, leaving her no room to return even though she commanded huge respect for about three decades as J Jayalalithaa’s proxy.

Now, according to her close aides and relatives, who held negotiations with various political camps ahead of her release, there are only a few options left for Sasikala.

#Option 1: Rejoin AIADMK

#Option 2: AIADMK gets AMMK as an ally

#Option 3: AMMK leads a third front

#Option 4: Sasikala exits politics
